In the ancient Near East, especially in Neo-Assyria, divination was not just magic but was a part of the political tool for the reign of kings, that is, knowledge of the ruler (Herrschaftswissen). Observational and interpretative materials obtained through divination were therefore regarded as authoritative knowledge. The authority of this knowledge is evident by the fact that it was communicated to the king in the form of letters and reports. These materials were then kept in libraries and served as reference books for the later generations of experts and scholars to interpret the natural phenomena they discovered, thereby enabling the study of the ancient Near East to grow. In particular, the Neo-Assyrian king employed a group of religious experts called ‘ummanu’ (scholar) in his court to solve problems affecting the security of the king and kingdom. The group was composed of astrologers (tupšarru), haruspices (bāru), physicians (asu), healing therapists (āšipu), and lamenting specialists (kalu). The group of specialist scholars worked together to give necessary advice and establish policies for the king and kingdom.
In this respect, the divination materials of the ancient Near East can be said to be the result of collective intelligence : a connected intelligence jointly accumulated by religious experts who were intellectuals at the time. Ancient Near Eastern divination (bārutu) has similarities to the ideas of today’s knowledge society. The religious experts of the ancient Near East were information-rich specialists, much like modern knowledge workers. They categorized and interpreted information and also generated, stored, and communicated knowledge. The information they eventually regulated became the primary material underpinning politics, economy, and culture. Religious specialists, as intellectuals, took various measures to eliminate impending dangers and change the unfortunate future for the maintenance and development of the king and kingdom. They were interested in each other’s fields of expertise, exchanged mutual information, and jointly generated new ideas. Their ‘sharing’ and ‘collaboration,’ based on close relations and exchanges, represent a part of the ancient Near Eastern collective intelligence system.
