This paper tentatively defines ‘adoption literature’ as a writing that includes the occurrence, process, progress, and results of adoption partially or entirely, and contains ‘primal wounds’ caused by adoption. The two novels, Somebody"s Daughter and If the Waves Belong to the Sea are both published by non-adopted writers and embody the complex layers of stories surrounding the returning Korean diasporic adoptees. In particular, the two novels feature the stories of the birth mothers, who had been excluded from ‘adoptee literature" so far. Sarah and Camilla, the diasporic adoptees in each novel, return to Korea to find their roots and search for origins, but what they realize is that the concept of the ‘real home’ is an illusion and a fiction. After affirming their diasporic identities (which are fragmented, variable, additive, and fluid), the two diasporic adoptees discover themselves and the world anew and embrace the others.
