Cranes, winter migratory birds visit the upper the Imjin River (in restricted area for civilians) in Yeoncheon-gun, Gyeonggi-do for wintering. In 2022, the Cultural Heritage Administration designated cranes’ winter habitat as a natural monument preservation area. The Gyeonggi-do artificially created a habitat named as the Peace-Wetland to protect cranes’ habitat in 2010. This study was conducted for setting a measure for the efficient operation for the Peace-Wetland of the Imjin River.
As a result of an analysis of cranes’ home range, the Peace-Wetland is not used as cranes’ direct habitat, but has very high value for protection since it is located at the center of the moving route between surrounding core habitats.
Cranes’ habitat in the Imjin River is divided into space for feeding activity and space for sleeping. The sleeping space was designated as a natural monument preservation area; however, the space for feeding activity was not. As a result of an analysis of changes in the use of land for three years, it is judged that the space for feeding activity has been ruined very much. It is judged that it is necessary to set a new protected area for the protection of cranes.
Local residents surrounding the Peace-Wetland want the revitalization of tourism, using the natural resources of the Imjin River. However, the Peace-Wetland and its surrounding area should be used and developed for ecological value as a priority. For this, this study proposes local development through the improvement of the ecological education field, centered around cranes, in terms of the direction for the improvement of the Peace-Wetland.
This study proposes a strategy for the promotion of educational institutions as the center by developing an ecological education program centered to cranes and a package tour product in connection with various attractive tourist resources located near the Peace-Wetland.
