This study examines the writing and reading of the main characters in ‘Rudin’ focusing on the ‘literacy’. The writing and reading of Rudin and Natalia, after their breakup is a key element that not only reveals the identity of each character but also hints at the future.
In the letter, names as a confession by Rudin himself, the superficial meaning of the literal interpretation of the text and the hidden meaning reflecting the author's true intentions constantly collide. Rudin's narrative style, illogically arranged sentences, and multi-pronged contradictions, along with the emotional insensitivity revealed throughout the letter, serve as clues to the fact that his letter is false.
Meanwhile, after breaking up with Rudin, Natalia begins to have a new understanding of herself and her surroundings through her reading. Based on her holistic understanding of Pushkin's poetry, Natalia properly grasps the artist's intentions and the multi-layered meaning of her work. Natalya, who Applies her empathy for poetry to her own life, emerges as a great reader.
As a result of successful communication with the artist, Natalya breaks away from her narrow and fixed perspective and changes to understand and judge her situation more broadly.
