According to Martha Nussbaum, most societies build strata of human beings and think some of them contaminated and disgusting. As people within the boundary are afraid of “being contaminated,” they try to expel the socially disgusting others, or contaminants, from their boundary, so as to confirm their superiority over the others, to construct their social status as firm and strong, and hide their own weaknesses. This is successfully dramatized in Twelfth Night, for example in disgust toward Malvolio, stigmatizing him as a lunatic, humiliating him in public, controlling his body and thoughts in custody, constraining his obedience, etc. Eventually, it results in his banishment from society after depriving him of his rightful social position. Bearbaiting, which highlights an aspect of cruelty and brutality in Elizabethan culture, is mentioned by the conspirators lightly in Twelfth Night but reflects their brutal inner desire to treat Malvolio in the same way.
