Artistic activity through play promotes children's instinctive curiosity and desire for inquiry, and thus has educational values such as free thinking, creative expression, refinement of emotions (catharsis), physical development, and coordination of exercise functions, etc. The study began with the awareness that play is important in child development, but that today’s children are deprived of play or limited to conditioned play. In particular, in order to cultivate creative convergent talents required in the knowledge and information society, sufficient opportunities for play to develop holistic potentials rather than knowledge-based education should be provided in children's life and education. The study explored Vygotskian approaches and Bandura's modeling viewing processes as teaching and learning principles to meaningfully realize the artistic play, which enables the self - expression by inducing infinite imagination and creativity of children. As a result, the following suggestions were drawn. First, teachers should make an effort to providing opportunities for children to experience self - expression and experimenting with various objects and materials, which are the key educational elements of artistic play. Second, it suggests that teachers should promote verbal and non - verbal interactions throughout the process of artistic activity and provide opportunities to observe art performance of teacher or peers. Third, future research is required to investigate verbal and non - verbal factors to impact on children’s artistic expression and holistic development in artistic play, and teaching characteristics of teachers to foster them.
