The paper explores how Japan will react to the alliance dilemma which dates to the Trump administration’s isolationism. In a deeper reality, the American long-rooted one-and-a-half-war strategy and its inactive response to China’s revisionist actions prompted Japan to doubt the validity of the security commitment. Propelled by this, Abe’s long-envisioned goal of the departure from the postwar regime prompts Japan to walk a self-reliant way. Whenever Japan faced alliance dilemmas during the Cold War era, it attempted to walk an independent way behind the Yoshida Doctrine. Interestingly, the U.S. isolationism offered Japan an opportunity to rearm. Likewise, Trump’s isolationism will cause Abe to rearm and attempt to move towards the “loosen the Yoshida Doctrine” combined with U.S. inactive intervention. With little U.S. intervention, he attempts to rearm and pivot to ASEAN, the South Asian region, and Russia, while undervaluing the role of U.S. troops in Japan’s security. However, the departure from the postwar regime may run counter to Japan’s sufficient guarantee to dilute the alliance dilemma. The U.S. also will find it difficult to secure its strategic interests in East Asia without getting Japan’s cooperation. It suggests that facing common foes, the two powers will be encouraged to move towards the Yoshida Doctrine supported by U.S. proactive exceptionalism by reassessing their own strategic interests. Redoubling the efforts to add more power, Japan will adopt its own rearmament and diplomacy which can be conducive to mitigating the alliance dilemma and enabling the departure from postwar regime.
