Rural transportation is regarded as the pinnacle of development in the agriculture sector and the rural areas of Jamaica. It enhances the livelihood of rural citizens, broadens the horizon of agriculture production, creates greater access to goods and services to both urban and rural residents, and helps in boosting the general economy. This paper critically examines the role of transportation policies, planning and access on the agriculture development of Jamaica.
The study revealed that improvements in the transportation system will encourage farmers to increase and diversify their level of production, add value to their agriculture produce, reduce spoilage, waste and damage to produce. The positive correlation between the independent variables and the dependent variable suggested that the transportation systems need urgent attention in strengthening the agriculture sector and the economy at large. Successful cases of development generated through improvement in rural transportation system were examined in this study. The research proposed strategies in overcoming the challenges of the transportation system.
