During the early 20th century, when western music was accepted and started developing in Colonial Chosun, Korean musicians usually belonged themselves to a group to carry out their music activities while having individual activities due to the situation of time period. Music groups that emerged from late 1910 started in two large forms of friendship promotion and performance gatherings, carried out activities mainly in the 1920s, and developed into organizations of large size and system in the 1930s. This study focuses on the JoongAng AkWooHoi that had been called the ‘first orchestra,’ raises a question on whether the musical situation at the time had enough conditions to establish an orchestra, and seeks to accurately investigate their characteristics. To properly identify the characteristics of the JoongAng AkWooHoi, it is necessary to review the music groups before this group and other music groups in the same period together. Therefore, this paper will comprehensively examine the purpose of formation and the activities of music groups in the 1910-20s, and clarify the background, member, and activity aspects through primary data as much as possible. Ultimately, this paper also aims to confirm how the JoongAng AkWooHoi became the foundation of Korean symphony orchestra, laid a foothold for the first professional female musicians besides music, and what social impacts it had such as effort to distribute western music to the general public. The paper will achieve these goals through the relations with other groups.
