John and the Synoptics. This is one of the much debated issues in the twentieth century. See D. Moody Smith, R. Kysar for the most helpful review of the history of the debate in twentieth century. D. Moody Smith, John among the Gospels, 2nd Ed (Columbia: University of South Carolina Press, 2001); R. Kysar, “The Gospel of John in current Research”, RelSRev 9 (1983), 314-23. Not a few articles and books have been published on this subject. Some scholarly meetings were devoted to explore this subject. For instance, in 1990, some 150 New Testament scholars participated in the thirty-ninth session of the Colloquium Biblicum Lovaniense (Aug 7-9, 1990) with the issue of “John and the Synoptics.” The book John and the Synoptics, edited by Adelbert Denaux, contains twenty-four offered papers in this Colloquium as wells as some other papers of the invited speakers regarding this issue. Adelbert Denaux, John and the Synoptics (Leuven: Leuven University Press, 1992). This debate arises due to the Fourth Gospels’ characteristic differences from as well as similarities to the Synoptic Gospels. In this article, we will consider two opposite positions suggested to explain the differences and similarities between John and the Synoptic Gospels: (1) John knew and used the Synoptic Gospels in writing his Gospel and (2) John did not use them but used the common traditions. The second position will be supported in this article.
