Temple and Mission in the Gospel of John Hae Saeng Kwon (Kukje Theological University) Jesus and his disciples are presented as the ones who were sent to the world for mission in the Gospel of John(Jn 17:18; 20:21). Jesus as the temple came to the world not only to reveal the Father but also to show the Father’s love through his atoning sacrifice on the cross. In addition, Jesus’ unity with the Father became the foundation for the unity of his disciples. Jesus’ disciples are also described as the temple, where the Father and the Son dwell through the Spirit(Jn 14:23). They had to be united with one another like the unity of the Father and the Son, and unveil the Father and the Son to the world(Jn 17:20-26). Additionally, as the temple where the Spirit was poured on, they should carry out the ministries of forgiveness of sins in the world(Jn 20:22-23). They had to preach the Gospel to the people, baptize and build them up with the words of the Lord for the extension of the temple. Unity and forgiveness, these are the two missions which they had to practise in the world. Therefore, the Gospel of John depicts Jesus as the temple which came into the world for mission. And Jesus’ community is presented as the temple of God which ministers for mission in the world. Thus, modern Christian churches should focus on the unity of the community and the forgiveness of sins, taking over the missions of Jesus and his disciples.
