The aim of this paper is to probe the characters of the dwelling places in the Gospel of John 14. There is no consensus among exegetes as to the place and character of the dwelling places. To solve this difficulty, the present researcher investigates the words of dwelling places in John 14:2, 3, 4, 23. And then the relation between the dwelling places and the written purpose of the Fourth Gospel and the readers’ responses to the dwelling places are dealt with. The dwelling places of John 14 are not related to the Second Coming, but should be interpreted in the context of Jesus’ ascension and the Pentecost and the persecution of the Jews. Like Jesus as the true temple, his disciples as the family of God become the dwelling places of God the Father, that is, the eschatological temple. Through the Holy Spirit on the Pentecost, God the Father and Jesus come to and dwell in the disciples. And when the disciples persecuted by the Jews die, their souls will go to the place where the ascended Jesus dwells. There is the paradise and a temporal heaven till the Second Parousia. Therefore the dwelling places in John 14 not only indicate the fact that the disciples will become eschatological temple by the Holy Spirit on Pentecost but also are related to the paradise as a temporal heavenly kingdom.
