This study investigates the lecturers’/professors’ perceptions of the class design and management at the Department of Japanese at a university. The study focus pertains to the shift from “offline” to “online” lectures in the first semester of 2020 during the outbreak of COVID-19 and the subsequent return to “offline” lectures in the first semester of 2022. This study aims to understand the lecturers’/professors’ experiences, improvement strategies for instructional design and management, and changes in perceptions resulting from the revival of online classes.
The findings indicate a high demand for the expansion and quality improvement of online education in the post-COVID-19 period. It is necessary to leverage online platforms for offline classes to adapt to these changes, drawing from the experiences gained during online instruction. Additionally, designing and managing online/offline teaching for every subject becomes essential to navigate the evolving educational landscape. Furthermore, it is necessary to enhance lecturers’/professors’ teaching skills and provide institutional and administrative support from the university. This support should include establishing an environment conducive to hybrid teaching.
