The present study attempted to investigate the study-abroad experiences of two undergraduate Japanese exchange students in a South Korean university based on pre-interview questionnaires and interviews over the course of one semester and two semesters respectively. The findings showed that the participants benefited from the social interactions through taking courses, using campus services such as the language exchange program, and taking advantage of the existing network from predecessors. While these social interactions facilitated their adaptation to the new SA environment, what was of particular note was the use of the English language in certain contexts. The participants’ lack of English language skills was found to be hindering their socialization, rather than the target language of Korean. The language barrier resulted in communication breakdowns with English-speaking peers as the target language did not function as an effective communication tool in this particular SA context. For better communication and more interaction with diverse peers, the participants indicated the need of using the English language. While this study added to the body of research on SA experiences in the non-English-speaking context, more research on the role of English in the non-English-speaking study-abroad context seems to be necessary.
