This essay aims to analyze Han Kang’s Human Acts and Bohumil Hrabal’s Too Loud a Solitude through the theoretical lens of Jacques Rancière’s politics and aesthetics. The objective of the essay is to provide a comprehensive exploration of Rancière’s theories about politics and aesthetics, delving into the nuances of his conceptual framework. As a prominent contemporary theorist, Rancière has extensively investigated the history of politics and presented the idea of radical democracy based on the principles of radical equality. Central to his ideas is the concept of the “distribution of the sensible,” which aims to deconstruct the hierarchical distribution of power and perception within society. By challenging the assumption of inherent inequality, Rancière argues for the inherent equality of all individuals. Rancière’s understanding of “the political” is rooted in the disruption it brings to the established order of the sensible. He asserts that politics emerges through the actions and voices of marginalized individuals who have been excluded from the traditional political sphere, thus necessitating a redistribution of the sensible. In addition to politics, Rancière’s aesthetics explores the intricate relationship between art, politics, and the distribution of the sensible. He perceives aesthetics as a revolutionary force that reconfigures and challenges the prevailing social order. Aesthetics, according to Rancière, engenders novel perspectives and modes of engagement with the world. As texts for analysis employing Rancière’s theories, this essay has selected Han Kang’s Human Acts and Bohumil Hrabal’s Too Loud a Solitude. Through an analysis of Han Kang’s Human Acts, the essay explores how the soulful voice of Dong-ho, a teenager massacred during the democratic uprising in Gwangju, contributes to the creation of a new distribution of the sensible. In the analysis of Bohumil Hrabal’s Too Loud a Solitude, the essay delves into the emergence of the regime of aesthetics from the underground world of abandoned books.
