The Chung’yong-wi(忠勇衛) guard was founded in 1356, but was only fully manned several months later. It is believed that this new group of guardsmen was modeled after the Mongol Yuan empire’s Sug‘wi-gun(宿衛軍, Imperial Guard) system. But for obvious political reasons the imperial system itself with all the details including the Mongol’s Cheonho(千戶)-Baekho(百戶) units, could not be completely copied. so Chung’yong-wi’s units too was designed as yet another variation of the Goryeo’s Six Wi units(Yug’wi, 六衛). Officers would have been selected for their military prowess, and at least in the beginning the army was made up of themselves without enlisted men. That may have led to the Goryeo government’s fashion of managing the royal guardsmen in general growing a bit similar to the Mongol’s imperial model.
Chung’yong-wi soldiers teamed up with the kešig, especially with the Qorchi(忽赤) figures, and took on duties of guarding royal progressions, protecting the King and defending the Capital city. In case of need they would also be sent out to the front and join battles, preemptively eliminating potential threats to the King’s safety. Later, however, when the Goryeo government’s strategy in dealing with the Japanese pirates was changed, the frequency of their joining active battles dropped. Simultaneously, some officials would criticize their presence as an unnecessary source of expenditure, and detrimental to the government’s fiscal management.
As a protective body directly attached to the King, Chung’yong-wi continued to exist till the early Joseon days. But as the Joseon government revised the Shi’wi(侍衛) institution of royal guardsmen, Chung’yong-wi suddenly vanished. It is unknown into which division in the guardsmen institution Chung’yong-wi would have been incorporated, or by which unit it was succeeded. It seems like it was abolished in the wake of the newborn dynasty’s establishment of a new Shi’wi system. But one may argue such abolition does not negate the historical meaning of the role Chung’yong-wi played (and why it was conceived in the first place) at the end of the Goryeo period.
