This article is the research on Tolstoy's “The Death of Ivan Il'ich” as one of his <smaller masterpieces> in the aspect of literary representation of 'death'. As its premise we examine his “Childhood”(first paragraph), where Maman's death can be regarded as a main theme and 'estrangement' (ostranenie) is functionally used. In the second paragraph, we read a short story of the earlier period, which describe the death in the counterpoint structure, and, unfinished short story <Diary of a Madman>('Arzamas horror'). The fourth paragraph is dedicated to the analysis of "The Death of Ivan Il'ich'. The novella is, strictly speaking, not so much about the death(smert') as about dying(umiranie). Therefore, It can be even defined as a 'disease narrative', showing one's whole life through dying of cancer. Our attention is paid to hero's history, struggle against illness, attitude to doctors and his family, relationship with Gerasim, his enlightenment(prosveshchenie, prosvetlenie) etc. In conclusion, we come back to the first chapter of this masterpiece and inspect the meaning of the social aspect of the death(Fifth paragraph).
