This study examined how social class moderates the relationships between preference, expectation, crowding, coping, and enjoyment in outdoor recreation. The findings illustrated that encounter preference was a stronger predictor of perceived crowding among individual in higher class while expectation played a more prominent role for those in lower class. Broadly, the associations between crowding, coping, and enjoyment were stronger among respondents in higher class. However, the nature of the relationships was conditioned by social class. For individuals in higher class, behavioral coping strategies had a detrimental influence on enjoyment whereas cognitive coping strategies had a positive impact, fully mediating the effect of crowding on enjoyment. On the other hand, while the coping mechanisms had a less influence on recreational experience of people from lower class, one of behavioral strategies (i.e., resource substitution) and cognitive strategies reduced the effect of crowding on enjoyment. The results highlighted the importance of social structure in understanding the complexity of the process by which individuals’ enjoyment is derived from their leisure participation.
