This study investigated the nature and significance of leisure experiences among adolescent student-athletes by analyzing their perceptions, environments, and experiences. In-depth interviews were conducted with nine adolescents registered as student-athletes in the Korean Sports & Olympic Committee. The collected data were analyzed using Strauss and Corbin"s grounded theory methodology, which led the derivation of core categories and paradigms. The central phenomenon identified was "seeking change for a better state," which encompasses three detailed pursuits: ‘recovery’, ‘development’, and ‘pleasure’. The causal conditions triggering this central phenomenon were identified as ‘physical and mental fatigue’, as well as an ‘instinctive desire for fun’, contextualised by the ‘student-athletes’" statuses and situations. Intervening conditions such as ‘concerns about future career and education’, ‘social networks’, and ‘significant performance-related events’ were found to influence the leisure experiences of student-athletes. ‘coping’, ‘enhancement’, ‘escapade’, and ‘deferral’ strategies were identified as key actions/interactions that shaped their leisure perceptions and experiences. Ultimately, these processes and behaviors led to a state of happiness characterised by the stages of initiation-execution-integration’. The study concludes that student-athletes" leisure perceptions and experiences contribute significantly to their emotional well-being and happiness.
