This study examines the copular verbal system of Dongxiang, a Mongolic language situated in the linguistically heterogeneous Gansu-Qinghai Sprachbund, focusing on both the inclusion of the Chinese copula and the non-inclusion of Tibetan egophoric markers. Initially, the study frames all the copular verbs in Dongxiang, then focuses on the unique double copula construction involving a native copula and shì. It identifies which Dongxiang copulas enable this pairing, challenging the prevailing notion that double copulas are possible only with the unsuffixed form ʋə by presenting new evidence that the existential VAine can also be paired. Additionally, it investigates the absence of Tibetan egophoric markers in the Dongxiang copular system, contrasting this with their presence in neighboring Mongolic languages. The study considers these two phenomena within the Dongxiang copular system, discussing the sociolinguistic factors influencing these linguistic adaptations and the broader sociocultural context in which Dongxiang is spoken.
