In this study, the character and goals, content system, and achievement standards of the 2022 revised “Speech and Language” subject were categorized into ‘orality-centered, discourse type-centered’ with a strong speech identity and ‘competency-centered, communication purpose-centered’ with a weak speech identity. The analysis that it has a strong speech identity and many character and goals, content systems, and achievement standards shows that it has not lost its character as a general elective subject to deepen understanding of the content learned in the common curriculum by maintaining the uniqueness of the ‘speech’ area; nevertheless, there are integrated areas that make it difficult to consider it appropriate as a subject. However, what was analyzed as an achievement standard with a weak speech identity was set to be integrated with the ‘grammar’ area, therefore it can be considered suitable as an integrated subject, considering its characteristics. This study enhances the understanding of the newly established “Speech and Language” subject, provides insight into how to view the integration of the two areas when selecting textbooks in high school settings, and provides insight into the academic uniqueness of each area in school classes. This serves as a reference for educational decisions on whether to focus on one area or integrate these two areas.
