Possession is one of the popular religious topics that are dealt with in a very provocative and interesting way in films, dramas, documentaries, etc. It could be said that the fear and fascination aroused by the supernatural hijacking of the human body stimulates popular interest. In contrast, there seems to be little academic discussion of the phenomenon of possession in Korean academia. When examining religious beliefs about the reality of possession, students of religion generally tend to be satisfied with phenomenological approaches that describe such beliefs without prejudice, and hesitant to develop academic explanations and interpretations. As a result, research often fails to progress beyond conveying the language and ideas of those who have experienced possession. This study pursues a theoretical method for describing the phenomenon of possession. It explores various ways of understanding possession as a natural religious phenomenon by reviewing the major academic works that have provided basic concepts and theoretical approaches to the study of possession. To this end, this study takes a closer look at the claims of scholars who have argued that the phenomenon of religious possession is a social and cultural construct, and re-examines the sociocultural meaning and function of possession.
