The memory surrounding the atomic bomb, which decisively contributed to the "self-defining as a victim" of the country that started the war, and the memory surrounding the "Japanese military Japanese Military Sexual Slavery" that challenged the old story of men's "sexual needs" in the war are located on the opposite side. So, why do the two memorials that confront each other share in common that they are both gendered "girls"? The "Bombing Children's Statue," which was built magnificently in Hiroshima Peace Park, and the "Peace Monument," which is installed low in an unstable position called the Japanese Embassy in Korea, have a huge difference in visibility and accessibility. This external difference reveals the process in which a monument/memorial space has been transformed from a monument that reveals masculine grandeur to a memorial space that is only completed by the participation of visitors. At the same time, the Atomic Bomb Children's Award, which was built by collecting donations from classmates to commemorate a 12-year-old atomic bomb girl, is an official memory of the country, showing that it is a male = hero narrative in the form of a 'girl'. This difference alone reveals the possibility that the "Peace Monument" will exceed the limits of the gendered war symbol despite the limitations of the "girl image" that presupposes voyeuristic memory/representational oblivion/exclusion of women's sexual damage.
