This paper examines the business operations and trade networks of Cantonese merchants in East Asia in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, focusing on materials from the recently disclosed commercial correspondences of the Dexing Firm held by the Incheon Metropolitan Museum. The analysis reveals changes in the business practices of Cantonese merchants in Korea after the First Sino-Japanese War, with shifts noted in their trade sectors, freight handling, and transaction settlements. The Dexing documents show that payments to Hong Kong were conducted through telegraphic transfers between branches of the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation in Incheon and Kobe, while remittances from Japan to Hong Kong were handled via commercial networks. In contrast, the transportation and remittance of goods to and from mainland China were processed through Yantai. Goods purchased from Hong Kong and Shanghai markets were initially transported to Yantai by steamship, then shipped to Korea on Shandongese junks according to product value and market demand, ultimately reaching Incheon. For payments to mainland China, remittance certificates denominated in the Shanghai tael, the standard currency in the Shanghai market, were issued in Seoul and sent directly to Yantai for settlement in Shanghai. The emergence of a remittance certificate market in Seoul and the entrance of British and Russian banks into this sector were influenced by the broader geopolitical dynamics of Russo-British competition in East Asia.
