This study analyzed Kyungmu Huibo, the official newspaper of the Korean Police Association under the Ministry of Police Affairs during Japan’s occupation of Korea, to examine the intentions and changes in Japanese sanitation policy. A linguistic analysis of hygiene-related articles was conducted, addressing the gap in police-related media studies during the colonial period. To overcome the limitations of qualitative analyses in colonial sanitation research, this study employed quantitative methods, such as word frequency analysis, to identify policy shifts and societal perceptions.
Published from 1910 to the early 1940s, Kyungmu Huibo is a valuable historical source reflecting Japanese colonization strategies and societal transformations in Joseon. The analysis revealed trends such as increased references to epidemics, indicating intensified prevention efforts, and a rise in scientific terminology, reflecting the spread of modern hygiene concepts. By focusing on this colonial publication, the study provides a systematic understanding of how Japanese governance shaped sanitation policies and the evolution of hygiene ideas in Joseon.
