This study examines the Korean negated adjectival predicate swipci anhta (“not easy”) from a Relevance Theory (Sperber & Wilson, 1986) perspective, focusing on its role as a stance marker in conversation. Although traditionally understood only as synonymous with its antonym eleypta (“difficult”) but with an attenuated meaning, it can be argued that swipci anhta may demonstrate distinct pragmatic functions in various contexts. Using corpus data consisted of conversational dialogues, this paper identifies two primary stance functions: evaluative and affiliative. The evaluative function includes addressing problematic situations and signaling the difficulty of omitted actions. The affiliative function further divides into affiliative stance based on expressions of empathy and the attenuation of disaffiliative stances. These findings reveal the complex interaction between negation and context, showcasing how swipci anhta facilitates alignment, evaluation, and politeness in communication. By highlighting the multifunctional nature of swipci anhta, this study contributes to a greater understanding of the pragmatic roles of negation and underscores the applicability of Relevance Theory in explaining the interaction between linguistic structure and social meaning.
