The paper interrogates the place of memory and counter-memory in narrating urbanization in the Seoul metropolis. The paper relies on fieldwork conducted in Korea between 2011 and 2012. Korea and Kenya are far apart in space, history and economic development. Nevertheless, the two countries share a past of colonization, struggle for freedom and postcolonial continuities and discontinuities. Relying on life history methodology and Foucault's theory of counter-memory, the study reexamines how individuals in the Seoul Metropolitan Region (SMR) resist official versions of urbanization to reconstruct alternative memory. The paper argues that counter-memory enriches and validates the collective memory of a people by giving voice to those whose perspectives are ignored by policymakers based on differences such as status in life, gender, disability, and ethnicity.
