Hamlet Q1 was produced with a script of the play of the same name, which was translated by director Hyon-u Lee and was premiered in 2009. It has a unique stage set that reconstructs the bare stage and balcony structure of the Globe Theater of Shakespeare era and visually expresses the distorted and irrational world reflected in Hamlet’s eyes. The dissolution of boundaries can be suggested as the keyword of stage directing. It pursues a dynamic drama that completes the play by breaking down the wall of clear separation between the players and the audience. By utilizing the symbolism of black and red color, the theme of the play is clearly expressed. The proper use of red petals goes beyond the function of simple props and acts as an essential element to show off the value of the performance. Utilizing the trap located in front of the stage overcomes the limited space of the stage. The tragedy of Denmark was replaced with that of Korean Empire. When watching Fortinbras’ forces in the ending scene, the audience is naturally reminded of the Japanese forces as an occupying force. Through Hamlet’s tragedy, this play reminds young audience that unfortunate history can be repeated at any time. And it also reminds audience that past history doesn’t just end with past events. The costumes of the players are contrasted, fused, and interculturally directed. Hyon-u Lee’s Hamlet Q1 will be recorded as a performance example that gives a fresh shock to the Koreanization of Shakespeare’s work.
