This study investigates the impact of speaking practice with generative AI chatbots on the speaking skills of beginner-level Korean language learners. Generative AI chatbots can be effective tools for speaking practice, particularly for learners with limited opportunities to engage in conversations in Korean. To this end, the study designed tasks that enable learners to practice speaking outside the classroom and examined their effectiveness. Beginner-level Korean language learners were divided into an experimental group, which practiced speaking with the chatbot, and a control group, which did not use the chatbot. The results of their speaking evaluations were then analyzed and compared. The speaking assessment was analyzed by dividing the scores into total score, scores by assessment criteria, and scores by question type. The score analysis showed no significant differences in total scores or scores by assessment criteria. However, in the question type ‘speaking on a simple topic,’ the experimental group scored higher than the control group, with the results being statistically significant. As research on the effectiveness of generative AI chatbots in second language education is still in its early stages, this study is significant in demonstrating the benefits of chatbot-assisted speaking practice for beginner-level Korean language learners.
