This paper tried to analyze the errors and distortions in the interpretation of the historical legacy of King Jeong jo from the Joseon Dynasty of Korea, as presented in the Chinese cultural publishing projects of the 2000s. A few years ago, I was able to access a series of books published as part of this Chinese project, titled “The Collection of Chinese Historical Research Materials Found Abroad.” In this collection, I was able to find incorrect interpretations regarding several historical books of Song Dynasty compiled by King Jeong jo.
The incorrect interpretation of the four historical books of the Song dynasty compiled by King Jeongjo was translated into Chinese, and it originated from “An Explanation of Korean Books in Gyujanggak” published by Seoul National University Press in 1981. This includes errors such as the incorrect translation of parts of “An Explanation of Old Korean Books” (1944) by Maema Kyosaku, a Korean interpreter and bibliographer during the Japanese colonial period, or the failure to properly reference King Jeongjo’s “Catalog of Korean Books in Gyujanggak.”
Above all, the biggest issue is the perspective and claims of the ‘Chinese Cultural Publishing Projects’ regarding the Joseon Dynasty and its cultural heritage. This project considers the Joseon Dynasty to be historically a vassal state of China, a country that revered ‘Chinese culture’ by using Classical Chinese as the official language and compiling many Chinese historical texts. Because the historical books of the Chinese Song Dynasty compiled by King Jeongjo of the Joseon Dynasty are seen as having been produced with the aim of inheriting the legitimacy of ‘Sinocentrism,’ the uniqueness or originality of Joseon culture is entirely negated.
This paper aims to refute these misconceptions and claims by presenting objective evidence one by one, and further seeks to prove the originality of the historical and cultural heritage from the era of King Jeongjo.
