This case study examined science classes for preparing students for high school graduation qualification examinations(HGQE) in an alternative school. Participants were five students aged 16 to 20 years. Classes were conducted 13 times(100 min/time) for three months. Course goals were to solve problems and foster scientific literacy, such as scientific knowledge and scientific thinking. Course materials included a textbook for high school qualification examination, reading materials prepared for the course, and a textbook for high school common science. Teaching and learning methods were lectures, reading and quizzes, practices, and solving problems from previous examinations. Students’ participation was influenced by both extrinsic motivation (the HGQE) and intrinsic motivation (scientific interest). Evaluation results by science HGQE conducted in August 2016 showed the followings: (1) Students had an integrated understanding rather than simple memorization of scientific concepts. (2) Students understood scientific concepts in connection with daily life. (3) Students showed individual differences in abilities for interpreting figures and graphs. Based on these results, future directions for HGQE were suggested.
