The purpose of this study is to examine the use of RDs in relation to critical thinking ability (CTA) and academic emotions quotient (AEQ). In order to accomplish this research purpose, 91 EFL participants were introduced to 10 RDs and encouraged to utilize them in their presentation scripts. Data sources were from the three tests of AEQ, CTA and RDs. The data was analyzed by one-way ANOVA 22.0 and Pearson Product Moment Correlation. The analysis indicated that there was a valid correlation among RD, AEQ and CTA. Anxiety and shame in AEQ indicated the highest negative correlation with evaluation of RD whereas CTA was positively correlated with evaluation of RD. Additionally, there was a significant difference depending on L2 proficiency levels. EFL learners at a higher proficiency level tended to utilize more and diverse RDs than ones at a lower proficiency level. The results implied that when EFL learners engaged in CTA, their cognitive processing stimulated utilization of RDs, making them less anxious and shameful, thereby affecting CTA.
