The purpose of this paper is to reinterpret the Korean Dangun myth from a sexological perspective in order to layout the religio-philosophical foundation of non-dualistic Korean mythological world view. Some feminists
have argued that Korean patriarchalism is being deeply embedded in
Korean myth. However, in my view, this is their artificial projection of philosophical, socio-cultural and political views on Korean myths, which can be termed quasi-imperialism in disguise of feminism. Korean feminist mythologists have recently been looking into this development, examining the validity of some feminists approach to the Korean myth. The rationale of this paper is that Korean feminism needs to be sensitive to the danger of
perpetuating a colonial mind-set resulting from misunderstanding of local culture and traditions without, of course, neglecting the issue of male dominated power structure within the Korean community and society. For this work, it is necessary to find the archetypal source of the Dangun myth, for this is what lies beneath the rational structure of the individual and
collective minds of Koreans. Hence, this paper is an attempt to restore the ancient wisdom embodied in the Dangun myth to formulate a new way of describing Korean understanding of sexuality and spirituality.
The focus of my argument here is on the relationship between Hwanung and Ugnyo. In contrast to Indo-European myths, the Dangun myth does not show an extreme conflict between male and female principles. The Dangun
myth rather promotes the idea of union and the cosmic harmony of male and female mode, symbolizing the idea of Chonbujimo(천부지모/天父地母/Heaven the Father and Earth the Mother). The spiritual foundation of the Dangun myth symbolizes the union of heaven and myth, and male and female principles reflecting on the ultimate concern and religious experience of the cosmic harmony. The harmony metaphysics lies in the dynamic and paradoxical unity of the two opposite parts. This principle suggests that the cosmic harmony takes place only through the interaction
of two opposing yet complementary modes, whereby a common field of coexistence is formed between them. The interaction between the two continues through mutual recognition and support rather than domination and control. Each part contributes to the process of fulfillment of the other part. The unity of opposites is paradoxical in the sense that an opposite
principle creates the same harmony by the inter-penetration of the other. This idea of relationality intimately involves in the symbolism of sexual embodiment of the Dangun myth. Dangun is the fruit of the primordial love story of male and female deities and ancient archetype of Korean sexology. A sexological interpretation of the Dangun myth offers a basic philosophical framework of Korean feminism as well: embodiment of spirituality and sexuality and the inter-relational thinking in the sense of wholeness. The sexual symbolism of the Dangun myth promotes that female sexuality and
body are divinely given for the primal connection and mutual relationship. The relational thinking emphasizes that true harmony consists not in excluding others but in including them. This relationality also guards against male-gender superiority and the logic of sexist dualism, renouncing body-alienation culture. Each part perfects the other and involves a reciprocal embodiment in the principle of internal relation in which each depends on other beings.
This relational thinking compels us toward compassion, collective action, integration, self-acceptance, and self-reflective memory in our critical recollection of the past. The erotic power of the Dangun myth is not inherently individual or selfish, but rather the indispensable grounding for engaging joyfully in working to create justice for the community. Since feminism and sexology is not merely an individual enterprise but collective one, the archetypal spirituality of the Dangun myth-embodiment and relationality-need to be a philosophical foundation of Korean feminism and sexology. In this way, Korean Dangun myth would be culturally more relevant and liberating for the Korean community as a whole.
