This study deals with a industrial labor union to define how the right to labor of nonstandard female workers are violated and collapsed. This study finds that the union justifies, rather than protects the right, the crisis of the right-to-labor, which was induced from company focusing on their own interests. This study focuses on the characteristics of interest conflicts between male and female workers, the expression of such conflicts, and deep-rooted male domination in union movement.
First, the recognition of standard male workers on nonstandard female workers is distorted without any concern about the situation of women employed as nonstandard workers. Female workers are considered only as a factor to occupy men's jobs or to bring the union to a crisis. The tire company, which is studied in this research, employs nonstandard workers to fill up vacancies occurring when standard workers leave. Moreover, male workers fail to understand female worker' situations because no interchange of opinions is promoted. It is safe to say that there is a significant distance between standard male workers and nonstandard female workers in terms of a psychological aspect.
Second, the discrimination against and exclusion of nonstandard fema]e workers by standard maJe workers are realized in the factory. The fact that the union refuses to allow women join in and requires the replacement of women with men means that the union focuses only on the interests of the laborers within organization though many laborers are iso]ated, and therefore, the union is being degraded into an interest group for a small number of workers and fail to serve as a representative of the whole laborers.
In conclusion, the systematic change is needed in order that the nonstandard female workers, who are excluded from the existing union, are allowed to participate in and protected by the union. The union should break from its bias in favor of nonstandard male workers and pay concerns on organizing nonstandard female workers. The specific experience as women and workers makes female workers to playa more active role to struggle for the interests of the whole laborers than any other labor groups.
