A new trend in linguistics to study language from the human centered viewpoint, or cognitive linguistics appeared in the 1980's. One of the most important mechanisms is the concept of 'construal', which shows a speaker's choice to conceptualize and express a 'scene' as an alternative way. In this light, linguistic meanings are not defined objectively, but they may depend upon a speaker's subjective cognitive ways of capturing and construing a scene. in this connection, this study establishes the basic concept of construal about cognitive construal of a scene hardly discussed in Korea's linguistic world, from the viewpoint of cognitive linguistic conceptualism, and addresses the problem of synonymy as a construal mechanism not solved for a long time in our linguistic world. The directions of this study are as follows. First, construal is the choice of a conceptualizer who conceptualizes a scene represent it in an alternative way. It is an active and subjective, cognitive ability of a conceptualizer for the effective communication. Linguistic construal as a part of visual perception can describe the characteristics of construal on the basis of perception, because it is a mental process very similar to visual perception, Second, the construal mechanism provides a new perspective for the problem of synonymy. The so-called synonymy on the levels of words and sentences can be included in the state of being synonymous from the truth-conditional semantics, but there is a difference in the ways of construal of a scene or situation. Third, what a scene means is not confined to the conceptual meaning, but includes the construal of the conceptualizer who gives a meaning to the conceptual content. Therefore, it can be said that the meaning of a scene covers the conceptual content and conceptualizer's cognitive construal of the content.
