On the morning of September 11, 2001, simultaneous-multiple terrorist holocausts broke out on the largest scale in history in New York and Washington D.C. Two hijacked American planes dive-bombed the twin skyscrapers of the World Trade Center. Almost at the same hour the third plane flew against part of the Pentagon in Washington D.C. The fourth plane crashed onto the ground in Pennsylvania. killing all aboard including the hijackers themselves.
The U.S. defined this as terrorism and war against America, spotting Osama bin Laden as the prime suspect. The Bush Administration pledged a massive retaliation and is preparing an attack on the Taliban regime of Afghanistan that has been harboring Osama bin Laden. The Sept. 11 terrorism has no precedent in history in that the terrorists made a frontal attack on the World Trade Center, a symbol of capitalism and pax Americana system and the Pentagon. the heart of the U.S. national defense. The upcoming American military operations and strategy may become a variable to divert the course of world history.
Taking a historical, political. and religious view of why this unparalleled tragedy had to happen. I will make a proposal to cope with terrorism in the light of Christian ethic.
Some regards terrorism as "an absolute evif' and others as "a necessary evil". Terrorism may be defined as creating terror atmosphere by resorting to systematic and lasting violence or the threats to do so to attain political. social. religious, or racial goals of a sovereign country or a specified organization until the cognition and policies of an individual. organization, the government of a community undergo changes. An amateur researcher of terrorism insists that terrorism is a desperate or emotional resistance the weak use against the strong. Thus an extreme adventurism called terrorism is born in a situation where a mass movement is impossible to start.
Terrorism is the last tactic chosen under the circumstances where there is no realistic alternatives to political. religious, or
racial convections. This is why terrorists risk their own lives.
The only consensus of opinion among terrorism researchers is that terrorism will not cease to exist as long as there is humanity. Director Choe Jin-tae of Korea Terrorism Research Institute said, "The structural cause of the existence of terrorism
lies in inequality... There aught to be exacting punishment of
terrorists, but indiscriminate retaliation will only give rise to more terrorism. "Then what is to be done by the U.S. and the rest of the peace-loving nations of the world? The only way is to go on diminishing political, economical. religious inequalities on planet earth. They are not innate terrorists; they are made into terrorists largely by later environment.
The assassination of the Austrian Grand Prince Ferdinand at Sarajevo on Tune 28, 1914, triggered World War 1. September 1. 1939, Hitler's German army invaded Poland without a declarations of war, it was the prelude to World War ll. This war alleged to be an attempt to break the economic embargo placed on Germany by England and France. Also, during the war death of civilians outnumbered that of soldiers. After the turn of the century terrorism become a common feature of both the exist of the right and the left. Under the autocracy of Hitler
s Germany and Stalin's Russia the so-called "white terrorism" was perpetrated by state organizations to promote national policies.
There are two conflicting views of America's war against terrorism. One is that after the Cold War was put an end to in the late 1980s with the collapse of the Soviet Union, the U.s. is the only superpower, so there can be no all-out World war ill. The other view is: If the U.S. devastates Afghanistan and other
Middle East countries harboring terrorists with her overwhelming military power in a single-minded effort to root out the Islam terrorist network it will entail intensified Arab bloc s anti-U.S. terrorism. only repeating a vicious circle.
The possibility of another world war between different cultures. Le. between Christianity and Islamism. was pointed out the world -famous political scholar Samuel Huntington in his book "The Clash of Civilizations". Islam extremists think that the western civilization always threatens their societies and values. The conflict and confrontations between the two civilizations have been repeated ever since the Crusade down to the today s conflict between Israel and Palestine.
Another factor that drove the Arabs toward anti Americanism is American stationary troops in Saudi Arabia. Under the pretext of protecting the oil fields American troops have been stationed there ever since the Gulf war. which is for eleven years. Osama defined the U.S. army as occupation troops. Of the three Islam sacred grounds: Mecca. Medina and Jerusalem. However. Mecca and Medina are located in Saudi Arabia. but Jerusalem is occupied by Israel with American troops. Osama Bin Laden who had fought with the 'heathen"
Russians in Afghanistan finally to expel them announces "a holy war against the U.S." in September. 1996. He said that "The U.s. is a group of evils. She is the world greatest thief and a country of terrorism. We cannot but choose the same means (terrorism) as they do'
Will the NATO nations take part in the 21-century Crusade? Dr. Otto Evgent. a high-ranking U.N. troops officer who has
served in Lebanon and Iraq, has this to say. "After the nightmares in New York and Washington D.C. what America has to do is to ask herself "Why?" . A lasting terrorism does not break out without a cause. Why hasn t terrorism taken place at the risk of precious lives in London. Paris, Stockholm, or Rome? The U.S. must have time to ask herself and reflect upon. Several years ago when the state office of Oklahoma was blown up, the U.S. promptly concluded it was committed by Arab terrorists. The terrorist, however, turned out to be an American youth. The violent bloody demonstrations at Seattle Convention of WTO of 2000 and Genova G8 Summit Conference of 2001 were the protests of European and American youths who opposed America-led globalization. What does the fact tell us that 60 - 70% of the Genova demonstrators were American youths? The U.S. Administration has to ponder over the reason why the younger generation of America are rebelling against American self-righteousness and high-handedness. America has to ask herself what is wrong with American society itself."
"An Eye for an eye leaves us all blind" is an appeal made by an American peace movement organization to the press. Part of
Peace Workers' message to the Washington Post reads: "Instead of selling destructive weapons to the world, we should send to the starving children of the world several hundred million dollars' worth of aid. We should build houses for the homeless and heal the uncared-for invalids. The real security of America consists in America's becoming genuine friend of the world's population."
In the early 1970s the year-end sales of General Motors
exceeded the GNP aggregates of Switzerland. South African Republic and Pakistan combined. Royal Dutch Shell boasted of properties exceeding those of Iran. Venezuela and Turkey combined. With these economic inequalities as they are. no war can repress or demolish the nameless and faceless suicidal terrorists. When the living conditions of the Arab bloc and the third world improve and when the Israeli occupation and oppression of the Palestinians cease and objective reality gets better. the atmosphere contributing to anti-Americanism and terrorism will certainly die down. The only way to prevent another world war is the settlement of poverty in the third world. an increased understanding and protection of interests of the oppressed groups of the third world; in brief. embrace and generosity. Retaliation returned with greater retaliation will only bring about eternal pain and suffering. Also this is what religion is all about. As is recorded in Jerem.. 17:10. the idea of justice pervading in the Old Testament is lex talionis. Therefore, the
justice in the Old Testament has an element of 'Judgment" in it (Isaiah. 28: 16-18), The Old Testament. however, presents a dimension stressing "mercy" and "compassion" to one's brothers (Zechariah. 7:9). The goal of justice consists in maintaining peace and balance in a community. thereby achieving an ideal faith community God desires.
A local war affects all nations of the world, because we are one community called planet earth. We should learn to listen to the Arab's voices suffering because of Zionism. The power of pax Americana should be manifested by sharing and embracing the world's pain. According to Genesis 1:31 ''And God saw every
thing that he made. and. behold. it is very good!" Here we may feel perfect bliss of creation. We should have concern with to preservation and procreation of our world for mankind! The highest virtue of mankind is love. which refers that our mercy and our effort of peaceful co-existence!
