The putpose of this paper is to examine three selected findings of research of the historical Jesus. Specifically, the paper investigates three attributes of the historical Jesus. First, the life of Jesus as a human being will be illustrated in light of a multicultural anthropological perspective, framed by Crossan's work, The Life of a Mediterranean Jewish Peasant. Second, Jesus' struggle against the human situation will be interpreted in light of liberation theology, framed by Sobrino's The Epiphany of the God in the Life of Jesus of Nazareth. Lastly, the resurrection of Jesus will be discussed by comparing different views from Pagels' Gnostic Gospels. The findings are listed as follows.
First, Jesus deliberately conjoined magic and meal, miracle and table, free compassion and open commensality. This was a challenge not only to Jewish purity regulations, but also to the Mediterranean's patriarchal culture. Thus, Jesus' life was as unacceptable in the first century, as it would be in practice today. Crossan concludes that the cause of Jesus' death, therefore, could be found in his provocative life rather than in one specific event immediately preceding his death.
Second, Jesus' public ministry was aimed at unmasking false divinities by announcing the good news of the reign of God. However, Jesus announced life first to those who had it least. God has a preferential option for the poor; stressing that life is offered to the poor, and that God's salvation is directed to them, and furthermore "only to the poor," is what caused scandal among powerful minorities, and what brought about the persecution of Jesus.
Third, the doctrine of Jesus' bodily resurrection serves an essential political function; it legitimizes the authority of certain men who claimto exercise exclusive leadershIp over the churches as the successors of the apostle Peter. From the second century, the doctrine served to validate the apostolic succession of bishops, which is the basis of papal authority to this day.
In summary, Jesus has been an endless research topic over the decades in diverse fields of theological studies. Crossan, Sobrino and Pagels are a few of many who have attempted to define who Jesus was, is, and will be.
