Jesus had great sympathy on women, especially those who were suffering and estranged from their society. He was compassionate about their distress and offered his hands to help them. He supported the widows who had no legal protection and encouraged the women to possess the Word of God on equal terms with men. When Jesus chose twelve disciples to begin public ministry, he allowed many women to follow and serve him. This shows that the discipleship can not be a monopoly of men.
The particular concern Jesus had on women signals the beginning of the Messianic era and the characteristics of the Kingdom of God. The Kingdom of God is a paradoxical world where the humble are raised, the arrogant are lowered, and the rich becomes empty-handed.(1:51-53)
We see the light of hope coming nearer through Jesus Christ who chose the weak and uneducated women, made them his disciples, and promised the Kingdom of God as an inheritance. God raised women and used them through the ministry of Jesus, so Jesus revealed the universal characteristic of God's Kingdom. By action and teaching Jesus suggested new direction and viewpoints going beyond the existing customs and institutions which had demanded only childbirth and obedience from women.
This study attempts to show the decisive will Jesus held on to for the liberation of woman by examing six stories introduced in the Gospel of Luke. Women in the Gospel of Luke are portrayed as accomplished disciples who contributed immensely from the birth of Jesus through to witnessing of his resurrection.
Despite the message of Good News Jesus had delivered to women, women in many parts of the world are still disadvantageous because of their female status. In some parts of the world, young women are frequently forced to engage in prostitution and are exposed to violence by people in authority.
The complete realization of Jesus' decisive will for women's liberation still awaits a long and difficult journey.
