The purpose of this thesis is to examine what the roles and the place of the women in Ancient Israel`s society were and find out how Jesus has revealed a different attitude from his contemporaries. In order to carry out this investigation the study divided the subjects into the following four groups: 1) the roles and the place of women in marriage, 2)the roles and the places in the Jewish families in those days. 3) the roles and the places of the women in the society, 4) the roles played and the places occupied by women in the Jewish religion. In each stage of dealing these subjects a particular attention is paid to see how Jesus, being one of the Jews of his days, has acted differently from his contemporaries. The study concludes with an inquiry into the theological meaning and historical significance of radical actions taken by Jesus. Ⅰ. The Roles and the Place of Women in marriage in Ancient Israel : What did Jesus think about them? For the Jews marriage is considered very important in life, being based on the Divine ordinance. The marriage most likely presupposes a monogamy, a marriage of a man and a wife. This indeed is fundamental for the sexual equality. Yet in fact there were numerous cases of polygamy as well. It may have been because of the tribal practice carried on for some time. The equality in this case was, of course out of question, for one man could possess several wives while a woman could not have many husbands. Furthermore, early marriage which was commonplace in those days was in most cases were arranged by their parents thereby the freedom of choice on the part of the married couple had to suffer considerably. Inequality is obvious even in the case of marriage between the close relatives. Regulations found in the Leviticus do not warrant the women equal right. That a widow should remarry her brother-in-law simply for offsprings, would not be fair. Divorce rule may not be as strict as Chosen-age of our country. A divorced woman is still allowed to remarry under certain circumstances based on the Deuteronomy. Yet the women were not fully allowed to divorce as men used to. We do not find any direct references in the teaching of Jesus concerning marriage regulations. Yet a significant allusion can be traced in the account of controversy with some accusing Pharisees, where Jesus made it clear that the marriage of a man and a wife is what God wills and that a man and wife is equal, as well. Jesus goes back to Genesis account of creation of man and woman. Jesus was accusing the partiality in the matters of divorce. Ⅱ. The Roles and the Place of Women in the Family Life and the Teaching of Jesus. A grave question arises as regarding the equality. First, male preferences can be pointed out as obvious sign of sexual discrimination. Second, mans dominance over women and women being subordinate to men creates inequality. It may be said to be somewhat better than master-slave relation; for the slave is no more than a property that can be sold (even daughters were sold) whereas wife is not. Nevertheless, this is not a fair, person to person, partnership on a equal bases. Wife is still considered one of the belongings. Concubine is worse. They were regarded as means of giving birth to men. Concubines would be discarded at any time even with no proper reasons. It all depended on men. Concubines and widows are often neglected without any social and economic securities. No word is directly said against these situations by Jesus himself. But we do have a few accounts of healing in which Jesus deals with some helpless women. Jesus shows his sympathy and concerns for the women in trouble. He heals the daughter of Jairus, a head of Synagogue and the daughter of Syrophenician woman for example. In both cases persons Jesus cares are female daughters. Jews would normally preferred the males. Men and women in the Kindom of God Jesus preached are treated equal. Such is the redemptive work of God. Ⅲ. The Roles and the Pla
