The purpose of this study is to reveal the characteristics of Seoyugi'(서유기)’s discourse and discuss its meaning. Seoyugi' is about an imaginary voyage that takes place within Dokgo Jun(독고준)’s conscious. Most of the people Dokgo Jun meets in Seoyugi' are personifications of beings printed in letter, or voiced by sound. Within Dokgo Jun’s conscious, they voice their thoughts regardless to Dokgo Jun’s will or intention and these voices do not change into that of Dokgo Jun. They remain the other's discourse.
The discourse of Seoyugi' retains ambiguous nuances, the reason being that Dokgo Jun does not actively take on the role of pulling in and arranging the other's discourse into a unified whole. Dokgo Jun’s thoughts are similar to that of a dream, without a subject and without any unified being that is the very basis of thought and its unity. Dokgo Jun cannot be said to be the subject of thought, in the modern sense, because he fails to construct his thoughts into a unified whole. The separate discourses float around anonymously. In turn, Dokgo Jun also exists as separate and distinct beings linked to each separate and distinct discourse. The reason behind Dokgo Jun’s indifference to the various discourses is the fear that his ideological inclination may be revealed. The fear stems first, from the existence of a surveillant gaze, and ultimately, is rooted in his childhood experience of people's trial. In other words, Dokgo Jun eliminates his subjectivity and remains anonymous, so as to nullify the surveillant gaze that keeps watch over his inner thoughts and demands confession. Seoyugi’s confusing disorderly writing style is also the result of such will.
