It might be said that the central problem in systematizing the current of modern novel is dependent on how to understand and estimate modernity. In order to elucidate the modernity of modern novel, various problems were brought up in terms of methodology such as a style, desires, narrative structure, a point of view, the inside, etc. This study also searches a proper answer on the modernity of modern novel through the novel of Heo Jun. Because the novel of Heo Jun was estimated contrastively as modern/anti-modern, realism/modernism, it would give an appropriate answer on what is considered to be modern in novel. For this, on the assumption that the problem on the recognition of the other is an epistemological foundation of modern novel, I examine the narrative function of the other´s recognition in the novel of Heo Jun, and searched the meaning of this writing method on the basis of it. In the novel of Heo Jun, the other is recognized through insult and characteristic voice. Insult is one of the existence methods of modern subject who should find the self through the other. A disputed point in the novel of Heo Jun is that; if any one should live with insult more or less, what is the method of overcoming this problem? Heo Jun connected the method of responding insult with the problem of establishing the subject. Also the novel of Heo Jun has the method of establishing the subject by keeping insulting, and the method of making characters struggling to the end to revenge that insult. So he makes two methods coexist and keeps reciprocal reflecting relationship. It is to expresses each character´s individual voice in a narrative structure of dialogue through the method of catching one event variously. The narrative construct of dialogue shows not only the limits of subjectivity but also the method of overcoming binomial opposition by presenting reciprocal subjective sphere. The recognition of the other functions as a medium of sublating binomial opposition in a narrative. Like this, the recognition of the other finds a chance of sublating binominal opposition in the faculty that can transform the matter of experience and its difference into ontology. The novel of Heo Jun could keeps distance from the system of modern binomial opposition by transforming difference into originality. The method of this narrative structure deserve to say to be unrivaled. If the correlation between his choice of the unified view system after liberation of korea and his crossing over into north Korea is searched, the theory of selection and exclusion which was formed as modern view system can be suggested as the answer.
