In this work, a single cylinder direct injection diesel engine equipped with common-rail injection was used to investigate the combustion and emissions characteristics of biodiesel fuel. Tested fuels were neat diesel and biodiesel obtained from unpolished rice. The volumetric blending ratios of biodiesel with conventional diesel fuel are set at 0. 10, 20 and 40%. Also the physical properties of blended fuels such as viscosity, surface tension and cetane number were analyzed to investigate the relations with the combustion and emission characteristics.
Experimental results show that the combustion pressure was increased at higher mixing ratio and injection pressure. The ignition delay became shorter with the increase of mixing ratio due to higher cetane number of biodicsel. The peak combustion pressure is increased with the rise of mixing ratio at an injection pressure of 100㎫, however opposite trend is shown at an injection pressure of 50㎫. Soot emission can be reduced by using biodiesel up to 70% compared to the conventional diesel fuel. But, NOx emission was slightly increased as the mixing ratio of biodiescl fuel increased. Also, EGR increased the ignition delay and decreased maximum combustion pressure.
