Universities are setting out to select their most desired students through the assessment of the level of writing in essays written by students. This has therefore raised the importance in the quality and level of essay writing. Standard High Schools now emphasize the importance of reading and prepare their students for the essay writing examination through the use of interactive debates.
This method however is not enough to adequately prepare the students in their University Entrance exams to perform to the high standard of essay writing that the universities demand. Thus, with the aim of resolving these problems, the method is to direct the class systematically and gradually to raise the level of essay writing. One of such methods for essay education is the application of student debates with two opposing arguments.
Students face various discords that arise in their everyday lives. Here, through appropriate guidance and materials provided by the teacher, group collaborated debates can take place.
Such debates, founded on reasonable arguments and when expressed in a logical manner, constitute an essay. The debate matter that is the result of creative thinking and logical refutation and when logically systematized becomes a great essay .
Therefore through the application of the model of two-sided debate theorized by Karl Popper, one hopes to base this as the educational background of the class.
Before the class, the purpose of the debate is decided and the theme of the arguments together with debate summary are discussed. The class itself, then involves the actual debate and the evaluation of the debate discussion of each argument, plus the teacher's overall assessment. Actual writing of the essay then follows the debate. Other activities here include, update of debate discussion on the internet, active post-discussion, organization of replies. In the next class, the student essays selected by the teacher are discussed.
In the future, through the use of various methods, a natural class environment must be made for the performance of essay-writing.
