This article is designed to introduce the original text of newly-discovered Shin-seunggu's 〈Gwandongbyolgokbeonsa〉 and to explain its literary characteristics. As is well-known, 〈Gwandongbyolgok(關東別曲)〉 was written by Songgang Jungcheol (1536~1593) in 1580(the 13th year of King Seonjo). It was transcribed and reproduced in various forms afterwards. 〈Gwandongbyolgokbeonsa〉, which was possessed by Shin-seunggu, was one of them and a 'beonsa' style of Chinese translation. Three different copies of 'beonsa(飜辭)' style 〈Gwandongbyolgok〉 were passed on until today, which are Cheongyum Kim-Sangheon(金尙憲)'s(1570~1652), Seopo Kim-manjoong(金萬重)'s(1637~1692), and Chongho Lee-yangryol(李揚烈, the date unknown). Shin-seunggu's 〈Gwandongbyolgokbeonsa〉 was recently discovered and became to be known as the fourth 'beonsa' style 〈Gwandongbyolgok〉.
It is not so clear that Shin-seunggu's translation was based on which edition of 〈Gwandongbyolgok〉. It was not based on Sungjoo edition of 〈Gwandongbyolgok〉 and would be the Leesun (李選本) or Yuisung edition(義城本). Being composed of 290 phrases, it was written in Chosa(楚辭) style.
Shin-seunggu's translation tried to keep the artistic style and poetic expression of original Korean text and to reflect the author's sincere heart. Evading extreme ommissions or expatiations that could be found in other 'beonsa' style 〈Gwandongbyolgok〉, it tried to be faithful to the original in translation. Shin-seunggu's 'beonsa' style is appreciated to emphasize the correctness and exactness of the original text and to stance on the principle of the 'describe, but not create' style of literary trend.
The translation of Korean lyric lines into Chinese was formed as a 'beonsa' style literature since Songsun's 〈Myonangjungga〉 and Jungcheol's 〈Gwandongbyolgok〉 were transcribed. Shin-seunggu's 〈Gwandongbyolgokbeonsa〉 was probably written for fear of extinction or for its literary value of the original text. It lets us see the stylization and transformation of literary form of 'beonsa' in the late period of Chosun Dynasty.
