I think that Korean historical education needs to both become less dependent on the text-book and less concentrated on National History ( Kuk-Sa). With this in mind, I have set out to analyse four movies. With the first, The Matrix, I hope to deconstruct the National History that so dominated Korean historical education. Through the analysis of the second, Taegukki: The Brotherhood of War, I hope to deconstruct the state that monopolizes history through National History, and show new ways in which one might understand history. Koreans have had a dual historical experience of the twentieth century. During the Japanese colonial period Koreans suffered from the lack of the state, but following liberation, the two cold-war states of North and South Korea oppressed individual freedom. The third movie Welcome to Tongmakkol describes an ideal Korea that is free of the state. This movie asks, through the fantasy world of Tongmakkol, whether a true humanism can be established beyond the state and ideology. The birth of National History corresponds with the establishment of the centralized modern state. The National History produced in the modern states was played the role of disciplined power, describing “history from above” to the citizens. The disciplined power of National History has rejected and controlled the voices of women and minorities, including regional minorities. For this reason, I will end my talk with a discussion of the Uprising of Lee Jae-su. Through this movie I will suggest the advantages of using a perspective of "history from below" in order to deconstruct National History and recover regional history.
