One of the major characteristics of The Importance of Being Earnest is its relentless inversion / subversion of what has been regarded significant in the western (literary) world. The play keeps on subverting the established western values including the significance of "earnestness"and "marriage" as well as various literary conventions--familiar mechanisms and motifs, etc.. This does not mean that the play is alienated from the western literary tradition. Rather, this play inherits and combines the diverse characteristics of farce, comedy of manners and melodrama but it goes beyond them; it is too intelligent to be a farce but too unrealistic or fantastic to be a comedy of manners. The play subverts the genre classification itself.
The Widen inversions are incessant; the play continues to undermine what it has established. Through the multiple parodies, the theme of the play is unclear. Many values are satirized but seemingly glorified at the same time. The significance of marriage, religion, birth, baptism, death, love, name, class, and money is undermined but in the end, the miraculous family reunion, the celebration of the new born couples and a promise of normal bourgeois life seem to endorse their original values. The characters' continuous playful epigrams, paradoxes, and witty repartee subvert the play's satirical force as well. The play ridicules the very idea that one of the basic components of a play should be a clear "thought."The characters' identities are fluctuated between the multiple selves. Jack finds his biological origin in the end, but his multiple personalities are not reconciled. Under the mask of a superb style, The Importance of Being Earnest contains confusion and negation. Wilde's dismantling of the dramatic conventions makes him a precursor of the absurd drama which appears a half century later. The Importance of Being Earnest is the work in which the western drama meets its future.
