「Lee Young-Yeo」, written by Kim, Woo-Jin, has been categorized as a realism play. Generally speaking, Kim's plays have the characteristics of expressionism So 「Lee Young-Yeo」 has been regarded as a exceptional play among Kim's plays. Supposing this, many scholars have a consensus that this play achieved the leading feature as a realism play in 1920's. At the same time they estimate that this play has not the perfect conditions of a realism play.
However, it's difficult to say that 「Lee Young-Yeo」 was aimed to portray as a realism play at its origin. The important feature of this play is summarized as 'the weakened action of a main character and the strengthened dialogue of the supporting characters.' In that case, it tried to show us the dramaturgy in the direction of breaking away realism play, especially, if we look at the its action, character, language. In terms of action, the crisis is behind the play, but on the other side the surrounding situayion is brought to the fore. In characters, main character appear at times and supporting characters are distributed. Looking at language, dialogue is minimized but chat and stage directions are seems to be maximized. This feature is not the general traits of realism play which focus on crisis of main character and essential dialogues.
This play present sporadically the discussion, thought, understanding and misunderstanding about Lee, Young-Yeo' s life instead of representing organically her life itself. The subject matters are realistic but the structure shows us anti -realistic inclination. In this Circumstance, the title role Lee, Young-Yeo has the shape as an abstract character who wiped out in reality.
