Lim Hwa(1908~1953. Real name Lim In Sik) secures a very important position in literatures history throughout the 1920s when the current Korean poetry had been formed and continuously developed and got ripe during the 1930s until about the time of Liberation. Started under the influence of decadence and romanticism of the early 1920s he soon became a Baptist of Dadaism, the most radical trend of literary thoughts and rapidly turned into a believer in proletariat literature. He also presented a successful standard of short epic poetry to the KAPF poets still indulged in inflexible idea and took his place as a delegate of proletariat poets at a jump. He was the lead of KAPF and Choson Literati Union (Choson Munhakga Dongmang) and at the same time a pioneering critic and literary historian who framed this theory. He was an actor and a literary Japanophile yielded under Japans pressure, a misfortunate hero who had been executed for being the spy of American Imperialism after he went to North Korea.
The study about Lim Hwa who followed the very way of the typical intellectuals life and literature piercing the miserable Korean modern history of early 20th century, the time from the colonial period to the Division, seemed to be focused on some short epic poems such as [My brother and the fire pot] [Hyunhaetan] symbolizing the struggle and fate of a youth living the colonial time and his other pro-poetry written later on. Relatively on the other hand, discussion on the early works before he started the real pro-literature has been neglected. The 10 pieces of his works released before [Dam 1927] with which he started his real pro-literature and published it with the KAPF bulletin {Art Movement}s first edition has been considered as some etude or transitional works and out of interest.
But it would be a very meaningful study to investigate and pay constant attention to the early works building the identity of a poet or writer before they get warmed into the real work. We have a point view in the early works there may be some unintentional direction of the poet or, even the course of his literary world to be developed afterwards. Besides, it will be a useful approach reviewing Lim Hwas early works that were out of the loop so far in order to know everything about a poet and his poetry world. So here we are to look into Lim Hwas early works before he started the real pro-poetry and examine the wandering and suffering of a literary youth lived in colonial time and his process of poetic change.
