Adults are continuously developing their cognitive thinking capacity. However, there has not been enough studies on adult's cognitive development. Piaget's cognitive development theory has exclusively focused on children and adolescent. Thus, it is essential for adult educators to engage in further studies on how adults develop their thinking capacity.
Contemporary adults are living in a rapid changing society where they are supposed to deal with many complex life issues. In order to deal with their life task or problem solving, many adults participate in adult and continuing education (lifelong education). Therefore, lifelong education should facilitate adults to develop their thinking capacity.
Piaget's formal way of thinking (4th stage of cognitive development) is not enough for adult learners because the stage shows its limit, as it just focuses on problem solving, rather than problem finding. Adult learners need to develop more integrated, complex, opened, and inclusive ways of thinking ability, which is found among 'the wise people.'
The concept of cognitive development has been discussed, including new findings of adult cognitive development revealed from several empirical studies. The necessity of developing the post-formal way of thing is strongly suggested with its rationale.
Finally, the implication of adult cognitive development has been suggested with several educational strategies.
