The representative farming songs in South Korea are rice-planting songs and weeding songs(songs during weeding rice paddies). This paper is to investigate distinctive features of farming songs at Jeon-nam province of Korea, by means of rice-planting songs and weeding songs in MBC Folk Song Collection (MBC 민요대전).
In relation to weeding songs of Jeon-nam province, more than half of them are sung by Nambu-Gyeongtori, which literally means a music style of Gyeong-gi province shown at south of Gyeong-gi. However, rice-planting songs are mostly sung by Yukjabaegi-tori which is a typical music style at Jeolla province.
As is generally known, weeding songs have a long tradition, when rice-planting songs have been sung after the spread of the rice transplanting technique in the 18th century. Thereby, it can be argued that Nambu-Gyeongtori is an indigenous music style of Jeon-nam province, and Yukjabaegi-tori is a new style, which was made refinedly by Nambu-Gyeongtori after the 18th century. These two representative music style of Jeon-nam province formed the basis of U-mode and Gyemyeon-mode of Pansori.
